Top Tips for Santorini
I can't believe I've been back for a week already. My tan (freckles) is fading faster in the dreary Scottish weather than I'd like, and real life is setting in fast. So in order to stave off the holiday blues, I thought I'd share my top tips for having a great time on the island!
- Take the Bus
The main island of Thira isn't so big, and you can get from one town to another really easily on the public transport. There are bus stops everywhere, and for just a few Euros you can see most of Santorini super easily!
- Avoid Cruise Days
Santorini is home to around 13,000 people. Doesn't sound like a lot, does it? Well on a busy cruise day that number is practically doubled with eager cruise goers looking to experience the island. The ships dock at Fira, and the town becomes chock full of tourists. The best thing to do is chill at the pool during the day, and then head into town around 8pm when the boats begin to depart.
- You Pay For The View
The view from Fira town is phenomenal. And you pay for it. A restaurant with a view over the caldera costs around 30% more than one just a few streets away. If you think the view is worth it then go for it, but I found it a lot more affordable to have a few drinks and watch the sunset, then head to the back streets for dinner. You aren't giving up on quality, there are some amazing restaurants dotted all over the town!
- See The Sunset
As far as I was concerned, a sunset was a sunset. I mean how incredible could it actually be? Turns out there's a good reason Santorini is famous for its' sunsets. Head to Oia for one of the most well known views on the island. I found it a little touristy, but it's definitely worth checking out. As well as some cute and quirky shops, head to the old castle for an amazing view as the sun goes down.
